SWEET SAM
A sheriff’s violent crusade against immigrants backfires when her scheme entangles a surgeon with violent tendencies of her own.
INTRODUCTION
Sweet Sam takes place in the modern-day American Southwest, close to the border with Mexico.
Inspired by the cinematic approach of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and the dramatic overtones of SICARIO, Sweet Sam is an imaginary tale of revenge and redemption.
A surgeon punishes hate and bigotry by changing its face.
It’s cold. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s timely, given the current political climate.
STORY
Somewhere in the middle of the Southwest desert… outside of an abandoned trailer home… LYNN CHULOWSKI, the Chief of Police in the small town of Silence, tortures a Hispanic woman. Lynn cuts an infinity sign on the woman’s forehead, branding her as illegal.
In the city nearby, DR. SAMANTHA (SAM) PARK, who left Silence years ago to become a plastic surgeon for those in need, is on a date with a man who will be found dead the next day in Silence – face torn to pieces at the abandoned factory, “Sweet Sam’s.”
JACK ALVAREZ, a detective in Silence and Sam’s childhood sweetheart, who plots to expose what Chief Chulowski does to people who are in the country illegally, becomes the primary suspect in the murder investigation.
And the story of revenge and redemption begins.
TONE AND STYLE
Sweet Sam is deeply immersed in the nature that surrounds the characters and events – a packrat discovers the dead body by its nest, a coyote follows Lynn through the desert, a howling mouse celebrates its kill in the deep of night, an owl hunts its prey.
Similarly, the visual aesthetic will be rooted in natural lighting, muted desaturated colors, and slow and purposeful camera movements.
Natural ambient sound will be heavily relied upon with minimal use of music.
Action and pain are naturalistic as well.
THE SETTING
Sweet Sam takes place in a fictional town of Silence nestled in the sparse beauty of the Southwest desert.
There is a downtown with a cowboy-era facade.
There is a small community church whose pastor devotes her life to helping people.
There is an abandoned factory all forgotten on the outskirts of the town.
There is an abandoned trailer home in the middle of the desert – a torture spot that no one will ever find.
There is a neighborhood of manufactured homes spread out on acres of land.
A lot of action happens in nature or while the characters drive, as both are an integral part of Southwest living.
